Research Progress on Surface Modification/Alloying by Electrical Discharge Machining

Electrical discharge surface modification/alloying(EDA) is different with the traditional surface treatment technology,based on the EDM(electrical discharge machining hereinafter referred to as EDM) principle,under high temperature by spark discharge,the electrode instantaneous melting and metallurgical chemical reaction occurs between the worn electrode and matrix that creat an alloy layer.Design different coating ingredient,coating may have wear-resistant,corrosion-resistant and other capabilities.Coating thickness can be controlled,the hardness and composition changes with gradually from the surface to the base body.The principle and characteristic of EDA are introduced.This paper reviews the domestic and foreign research development situation of EDA.The influence of energy and other factors on electrode and work-piece eclipse eliminates, mass transport coefficient as well as the coating micro-topography is analyzed,simultaneously application prospect of this technology is given.
