Multidimensional Measurement on China's Poverty

FANG Ying-feng(School of Economics and Management,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430072,China)
This paper holds that unitary income to evaluate poverty will underestimate individual's real poverty status, and will be very difficult to reflect complexity, vulnerability and permanence of individual's poverty. We then employ CHNS data to analyze China's poverty status from multi-dimensionalities based on Sen's capability approach and use fuzzy approach to calculate China's multidimensional poverty indices to give China's multidimensional poverty a general evaluation. We conclude that individual poverty in education, health and medical insurance is severer than income poverty, that multidimensional poverty is sensitive to measurement approach and weight, that AF multidimensional poverty under equal weight is dominated by multidimensional poverty under other approaches and weights, that poverty in housing, sanitation and health adjusted by weight contributes more to multidimensional poverty, and that poverty in the West, rural areas and for female is more severe.
