New method for reducing cogging torque in surface-mounted permanent magnet motors

In slotted permanent magnet motors, there exists cogging torque, which may cause noise and vibration. A new method for reducing the cogging torque by changing the shape of magnet pole is proposed. Based on finite ele- ment analysis, the cogging torque and flux per pole for different magnetic pole shape is analyzed. The effects of dif- ferent combinations of slot number and pole number on cogging torque are also investigated. The study shows that the cogging torque could be greatly reduced while the flux per pole changes little by using eccentric magnetic pole. The new method proposed in this paper is proved to be effective.
