Novel method for reducing cogging torque in surface-mounted permanent magnet motor with different width of permanent magnets

A novel method for reducing cogging torque in surface mounted permanent magnet(PM) motors by changing pole arc coefficient was proposed,which was different from the existed method of pole arc selection and pole arc combination.In this method,all the pole arc widths of PM in the rotor were the same except one.Analytical expression for cogging torque by pole arc changing with this method was obtained based on the same quantity of PM.The method for fixing the pole arc coefficient was proposed.Two prototype motors were analyzed by Finite Element Method(FEM) with the above method.The result indicated that the method proposed in this paper can reduce the cogging torque notably.
