InSAR INVESTIGATION IN THE EARLY STAGE OF THE THREE GORGES PROJECT ON THE YANGTZE RIVER

The on going Three Gorges Project aims to build one of the largest hydropower stations in the world. Previous investigations have concluded that the reservoir is likely to induce moderately strong earthquakes. An effort is being made to establish and maintain a geodetic and seismological monitoring network around the reservoir to monitor seismicity and deformation, and to facilitate mitigation activities in case a strong earthquake occurs. In the same time, another effort is being made to study the feasibility of using ERS interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques to derive background deformation patterns in the area. The InSAR results will be compared with GPS measurements and an optimal monitoring scheme will be developed during the early stage of the Three Gorges Project. The study will contribute to future detection of reservoir induced crustal deformation and earthquakes after the dam construction is completed and the impoundment is implemented.\;
