Research on Integrated Operation of Vector and Raster Data in Object-Relational Database

Nowadays,spatial database is the most important way of storing and organizing vector data in GIS applications.While the raster data,which is also a major source of spatial information,is primarily stored as data files because of the intrinsic complexity and huge size.Some GIS and database software vendors began to support raster data in their database products,but only data storage and organization is concerned.Currently,there is not an accepted standard specification for the integrated operation on vector and raster data,although some pilot studies have been taken in recent years.In this paper,the characteristics of vector and raster data were analyzed,and a series of vector-raster integrated functions were given,then a prototype system was built based on PostgreSQL/PostGIS.Lastly,the problem-solving ability of such a database extension was discussed.
