Fuzhou Shipping School and its scientific education

Wang Dongling (Dalian Education Univ., Dalian 116021,China)
Fuzhou Shipping School was the first naval manufacture school in modern China. The aim of running the school was to foster qualified scientists and technicians. The main specialities were ship manufacturing, pilot and engineering. In the 1870s, in order to train the students in an all-round way and let them master advanced levels of the speciality, they sent students studying in Europe. The founding of Fuzhou Shipping School reflected the changing demand for economic structure in modern China. It also represented the new tendency of the development for modern education. The achievement and the historical function for Fuzhou Shipping School to carry out the scientific education will never be obliterated.
