Overview on Measures of Short-Circuit Current Limitation on Power System

With regard to the impact of the increasing short-circuit current to safe operation and management of the power system, this paper analyzes the methods of limiting short-circuit currents from two different aspects, namely, power grid composition and substations. The measures falling into the grid composition include rational power system planning, proper power grid connections, and upgrading of distribution network voltages, while the measures in terms of substations include changing the operation patterns of the transformers, and adopting high-impedance equipment and controllable series reactors. Merits and drawbacks are compared and analyzed for all these methods with descriptions of the actual application and development trend for each of them. Two measures to restrict the asymmetric short-circuit current are presented briefly.
