Analysis of Crowbar Circuits Used in Direct-drive WTG Systems

New power grid regulation requires WTG systems have low voltage ride-through(LVRT) capability.By adding Crowbar protection circuits,the fault ride through capability of direct drive WTG systems can be greatly improved.This paper summarizes Crowbar protection circuits,categorizes commonly used for Crowbar protection schemes,elaborates on their principles and realizations,as well as discusses their own advantages and disadvantages.Analysis shows that Crow circuits are preferred in DC side and have low cost and high reliability;series auxiliary converter Crowbar circuits have favorable compensation performance,fast response and good prospects.
