3-D numerical-wave-tank technology and its application

A 3-D numerical-wave-tank (NWT) is developed for numerical simulations of wave-structure interactions. The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to numerically solve the governing equations of viscous flows and track the free surface. Some segmented numerical wave makers are set to generate obliquely incident waves at one end of the tank. At the downwave end of the tank which is treated as an open boundary, an artificial damping scheme is applied to reduce the vertical velocity within a velocity reduction zone adjacent to the open boundary. In order to control the fluid motion at the open boundary, the Sommerfeld radiation condition is applied to those reduced waves. For oblique wave generation, the operation of lateral periodic boundaries is adopted. Numerical tests show that waves generating and propagating in the present 3-D NWT are of good repeatability and stability. Using it, wave loads on a fixed model ship are calculated and compared with experimental values.
