Size effect on elastic constants of composite materials

Size effect of the specimen, relative to the size of the microstructure of composite materials, is an important issue in measuring the effective material properties. Similarly, size effect of the microstructure, relative to the previous rank one, of multi-ranked materials is also an important issue. The effects of the sizes of the rank-2 microstructure, relative to that of rank-1, of ranked layered materials on the effective elastic constants are investigated using homogenization based mapping method. The influences of the volume fraction and the differences between the Young′s modulus of components on the degree of size effect are analyzed. The numerical results show that the aspect ratio of the rank-2 microstructure has great influences on the elastic constants when the sizes of the thickness and the width of layers of the rank-1 layered materials are close to each other, or the aspect ratio of the rank-2 microstructure is close to 1. But these influences decrease fast with the increase of the difference between thickness and width. The aspect ratio has little influence on the constants when the ratio of thickness to width is less than a threshold or greater than its reciprocal.
