The influence of salinity on standard metabolism of juvenile common carp ( Cyprinus carpio L. )

The standard metabolic rates of juvenile common carp weighting 1. 37-5. 30g are determined with closed respiroments at different salinities and the constant temperature (27 ℃). The results show that the mean rates of standard metabolism of carp at freshwater and all kinds of salinities 3, 5, 7, 9 are 97-10, 65. 55, 115. 41, 120. 59, 136. 29 J/g · d and the differences are very significant. The relationship between standard metabolism (Rs: J/day) and body weight (W: g) can be described by the power function; Rs = aWb, the correlativity is highly significant. There is no significant difference in the weight exponent (b) among five salinities, but the b values showed a tendency to decline at 7 and 9 salinities. Considered the osmoregulatory energy cost, the physiology mechanism which weigh exponent (b) changed with salinity and salinity influence standard metabolism of freshwater fishes.
