The effect of starvation on the function of immune cells in redfin puffer(Fugu rubripes)

The white-cell count in peripheral blood,transformation rate of lymphocytes and phagocytosis efficiency of macrophages in spleen were measured in redfin puffer(Fugu rubripes) weighing 181.75±17.21 g starved for 0d,10d,20d,30d,and 40 d.The results showed that the starved fish had significant higher white-cell counts than the fed fish,the peak value occurring 20 d after starvation.There were higher multiplication and efficiency of transformation in the lymphocytes in the starved fish than those in the fed fish,the peak value found on 10 d starvation.Since then,however,the transformation rate of the lymphocytes decreased with the increase in starvation period.Phagocytosis activity and efficiency of the macrophage in the spleen are higher in the starved fish than those in the fed fish,with the peak after 20 d starvation.
