ON THE NATURAL ZONATION IN THE QINGHAI-XIZANG PLATEAU

Very high elevation coupled with very vast extension as well as their accom-panying intense thermodynamic effects have made the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau a unique physical geographical region in the world, where natural conditions are very complicated and the horizontal zonation is closely correlated with vertical zonation. The regional differentiation of the Plateau is determined mainly by the topogra-phic features and the characteristics of the atmospheric circulation. The Plateau is rimmed by great mountain ranges-----the Kunlun, the Qilian to the north, and the Great Himalaya range to the south. As a whole, the Plateau tips from the northwest to the southeast. During summer, the southern warm and moist monsoons dominate, while in winter it is controlled by the westerlies. Because the lofty Himalaya which extends along the southern rim of the Plateau forms an effective climatic barrier, the monsoons find their way up river gorges in the Hengduan Mountains "Traverse Block Mountains", resulting in a very conspicuous regional moisture variation in the Pla-teau. In general, it is warm and humid in the southeast, while cold and arid in the northwest. All of these phenomena are mirrored in the natural zonation, from sou-theast to northwest, zones of forests, meadows, steppes and deserts appear in succession. Based on the above-mentioned chief characteristics of the regional differentiation in the Plateau, a number of natural zones may be recognized as follows: I1 Zone of tropical and subtropical montane forests in the southern slopes of the Himalaya (warm, humid) : It is located outside the Plateau proper, with intensive fluvial erosion and deep gorges. The typical vegetation types at lower altitudes are evergreen rainforest, semi-evergreen monsoon forest and evergreen broad-leaf forest. II1 Zone of montane coniferous forest in the eastern Xizang and the western Sichuan (temperate, subhumid-humid). It is the area of lofty nearly north-south mountain ranges and deep river gorges. The vertical zonation is very marked and the upper forestline is located as high as 4,400-4,600 m. a. s. l. II2 Zone of alpine shrubby meadow in the Nagqu Yushu region (cold, subhumid). It is a slightly dissected plateau, periglacial geomorphologic features are distributed widely. The predominant vegetations consist of alpine meadows and alpine shrubs, the lower valley floors are covered with marshes or marshy meadows. II3 Zone of montane shrubby steppe in the southern Xizang (temperate,semi-arid). The Yarlung Zangbo River traverses the southern Xizang from west to east. It runs parallel with main Himalaya ranges. In its middle reaches, broad valleys al-ternate with narrow gorges. The extensive valley with an altitudes varying between 3,500-4.500 m. a. s. l. has a large capability for agricultural development. II4 Zone of alpine steppe in the Changtang plateau (cold, semi-arid).It is the vast plateau proper with an altitudes about 4,500-4,800 m. a. s. l.The drainage is locked up by mountains, and numerous lakes are either salty or brackish.Both the lacustrine plains and the piedmont depositions are very extensive.The predominant vegetation is alpine steppe,consisting chiefly of Stipa purpurea. II5 Zone of alpine steppe in the southern Qinghai (cold, semi-arid).It is distri-buted in the upper reaches of the Chang Jiang River ias well as the Huang He River. It is a slightly dissected plateau with gentle relief.The permafrost occurs extensively. The main vegetation is alpine steppe, but the upper slopes are covered by alpine meadows. II6 Zone of montane forest-steppe in the eastern Qinghai and Qilian (cool tem-perate, semi-arid).It is located in the northeastern part of the Plateau, composed of the eastern Qilian and the broad valley basin of the Qinghai Lake.The predominant vegetation is montane steppe,with montane forest on the northern slopes. II7 Zone of montane desert steppe and montane desert in the Ngari region (cool temperate, arid). It is distributed in the upper reaches of the Indus River and the broad basin of
