A METHOD OF CALCULATING THE MONTHLY AND ANNUAL MEAN TEMPERATURES IN MOUNTAINOUS AREA

In this paper, a method of calculating the monthly and annual mean temperatures in mountainous area and its application in Shaxi River valley in Fujian Province China are presented. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The monthly or annual mean temperature (T) at any locality is separated into five-components caused by longitude (T ), latitude (T ), altitude (T h), macrotopography (T ) and microtopography (Tm), and each of them is determined individaully. It is found that the correlation coefficients of multiple linear regression equations of T on , and h are very significant statistically and the altitude has the greatest effect on the distribution of temperature in mountainouas area, especially in summer. 2. The lapse rate of monthly mean temperatures in winter is smaller than that in summer, ranging from 0.43 to 0.60℃/100 m, and that of annual mean temperature is 0.5℃/100 m. 3. The value of Tg varies from ?±0.2℃ in summer to ±0.4℃ in winter, and its annual mean is ±0.3℃. The geographical distribution of Tg shows the temperature falling regions are found in the mountain area and the temperature rising regions in the valley. 4. The variation of Tm can be divided into four types: (A) temperature rising the whole year with Tm1.0℃. (B) temperature falling in the whole year with Tm- 1.0℃, (C) temperture rising in summer and falling in winter with 0.5≥Tm≥- 0.5C and (D) temperature invariable with Tm=-0.1℃ 5. The results of calculation obtained by using the method in this paper indicate the difference between the actual and the calculated temperatures is ≤0.1℃ in most cases and not more than ?±0.3℃. It may be seen that the accuracy of the calculation is very satisfactory. 6. As an example, a map (at 1:100000 scale) of the geographical distribution of annual mean temperature in Yangxi Township of Shaxian County, Fujian Province, is compiled. The calculated upper limits of evergreen broad-leaf forest and bamboo forest agree well with the actual distributions of them.
