A STUDY ON TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF THE DANXIASCENIC DISTRICT

This paper has been completed on the basis of the authors' investigations and study on the landscape resources and tourism development of the Danxia basin in northern Guangdong Province from December, 1986 to July, 1988. The investigations have been made into such subjects as the geology and geomorphology of Danxia Terrain; the history of human activities including economy, religion, folklore, and sight seeing; the characteristics of landscape aesthetics; the current utilizations of landscape resources including forestry, fishery, tourist industry and landscape architecture constructions; the protection of landscape resources and the demands for further tourism development in Danxia Basin area. The authors apply the theory of recreational and tourism geography combined with the principles of landscape planning to study the comprehensive evaluation of landscape resources, expounding and proving the necessity of further exploitation of the resources for tourism development, and putting forward the general planning of tourism development of Danxia Scenic District. We are convinced that this work will be beneficial to the comprehensive study and application of recreation and tourism geography as well as the planning and construction of the scenic districts in our country. In the first section of the paper, the authors point out that the landscape of Danxia Basin has taken an important position in the landscape structure of northern Guangdong region and the establishment of Danxia Scenic District and its tourism development will play an important role in the development of northern Guangdong resort network. In the next two sections the paper briefly presents the overall descriptions of the natural and cultural landscape of Danxia Basin.In the fourth section, the paper gives the comprehensive evaluations of the scientific, historical and cultural landscape aesthetical, environmental and ecological values of the landscape resources. The evaluation of current utilization, the characteristics of recreation and tourism activity, and the conditions and potentialities of further development have also been given. In the final section, the authors work out a general planning of the tourism development of Danxia Scnic District which contains the planning of the landscape preservation stystem, the spatial organization system of recreation and tourism, the service system and the arrangement of recreation and tourism activity. The programme of the implementation of the general planning by stages has also been given. Finally, the authors make a suggestion about the administrative system in order to guarantee the realization of the planning.
