The principle and construction of an expert system for power transformer faults diagnosis, called TFDES, are described in this paper. For the diagnosis of defects in transformers, TFDES makes inference mainly based on gas chromatography together with several other fault detection methods comprehensively. Some vagueness is dealt with properly by using fuzzy logic. The results of preliminary tests show that the system has a reasonable construction and a correct inference engine, it can detect the incipient faults of transformers in service effectively.
