The fault location system based on the travelling wave has very high precision, but it asks for high speed sampling,a great deal of storage and complex algorithms identifying for travelling wave. It also has some trouble in dealing withdeveloping fault and faults from nearby substation. A new travelling wave recorder is designed with a new sensor fordetecting travelling wave, a GPS clock with high precision and a new way for directly storing the time when fault-generatedtravelling wave reaches every substation. The faults can be precisely located in the transmission network by a GPS travellingwave measuring network that only needs to Install one GPS travelling wave recorder in every substation.
