MODERN FAULT LOCATION TECHNIQUES BASED ON FAULT GENERATED TRAVELLING WAVES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

Working principles of transmission line fault location techniques based on fault generated voltage and current travelling waves are introduced.Type A fault location technique measures time delay between the first and second surge from fault point.Type D measures arriving time of fault initiated surge at both ends of the monitored line.Type E measures time delay of reflection at fault point to the surge injected by circuit breaker reclosing.Some key techniques, such as measurement of fault generated travelling wave signals, super high speed records, wavelet detection of travelling wave pulses and the precise time synchronism of double-end equipment, that make modern fault location techniques based on travelling wave practically applicable are discussed.
