IMPLEMENTATION OF REMOTE REAL-TIME SUPERVISORY CONTROL WITH ATM NETWORKS

This paper proposes a novel solution to implementing real-time communication over a long distance in a real-time control and analysis system for power systems. It is shown that the topology of network should be based on star-connection and adopt Fat-Client/Server paradigm. The physical layer of communication networks should use SONET which can provide enough bandwidth. The technology of optical amplification should be adopted to eliminate communication bottleneck that occurs during the opto/electronic conversion in optical repeaters. To satisfy the QoS requirement, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching technology, which can provide excellent real-time transmission service, should be chosen. After carefully estimating the possibility of data loss and calculating the delay of communication, it is concluded that by using this solution, the requirements for real-time characteristic and reliability can be met.
