STATIC CHARACTERISTIC ANALYSIS OF DISTANCE RELAY BASED ON EMTP STEADY STATE COMPUTATION

This paper presents a novel method for static characteristic analysis of distance relay. In a distributed parameter system model, the fault resistance is modified according to "the improved direct principle". The operation of the distance relay is decided by the fault current and fault voltage based on the steady state computation of Electro Magnetic Transients Program. The fault point is changed orderly after the critical tapped resistance in the fault point is found. The tapped resistance characteristic of this kind of distance relay is obtained when every fault point in the system model is considered. The influence of changing system parameters such as source impedance is studied. The simulation results show that this method is valid and will have a wide application.
