Adaptive Directional Element Based on Waveform Factor

Currently available fast directional elements have some defects such as conservative and blind operation range when short-data-window algorithm is adopted. An adaptive directional element based on waveform factor is proposed in this paper to overcome defects above. The waveform factor can describe the distortion degree of optional data-window that is of certain relationship with phase error. When a fault occurs, the waveform factors of fault voltage and current are calculated in realtime, and then the operational range of directional element is adaptively adjusted according to the relationship between the waveform factors and the phase error. This proposed method can enhance the performance of directional element and work correctly under various conditions. In the paper, data from dynamic simulations are used to test the directional element, and the results show the correctness and advantages of the new directional element proposed.
