Study on WAMS Based Power System Disturbance Identifying Method

With the steady expansion of power grid interconnection, it is important for operators to know about the power system dynamic status in time should disturbance occurs in order to take appropriate counter-measures to ensure the power system security. Recently, based on the global position system (GPS), the wide-area measurement system (WAMS) has made the power system dynamic behavior monitoring possible. Based on WAMS, a method for identifying different kinds of disturbance in a power system is presented in this paper. First, the features of disturbances (i.e. short circuit, generation shedding and load shedding) that frequently occur in power system are analyzed in detail. Then, based on the concept of pattern recognition, the basic procedure for disturbance identification using real-time quantities measured by phase measurement unit (PMU) is discussed. Finally, the simulation results obtained in the North China power grid have proved the validity of the theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the proposed disturbance identifying method.
