Study on Setting Calculation of Distance Protection Time-delay Zones for Ultra-high Voltage Power Transmission Lines

The setting delay-time of zone Ⅱ of distance protection too long caused by strict matching principle of setting calculation may happen in distance protection for ultrahigh voltage power transmission lines,which is by reason of co-ordination of multi zones Ⅱ and is probably threatening to power system security if line main protections resist to operate in the period of line fault.The paper proposes a setting calculation method for distance protection delay-time zones,in which zone Ⅱ only matches with pilot protection of the adjacent lines.If the sensitivity is not satisfied under this coordination pattern,a sensitivity adjustment function is adopted to enhance the sensitivity in order to respond most faults,and increase setting delay-time as well to ensure selectivity.Moreover,zone Ⅲ is applied as with traditional zone Ⅱ in the viewpoint of sensitivity complementary,to ensure sensitivity.An example verifies that the method for distance protection proposed can act speedily and guarantee of selectivity and sensitivity.Besides,it has the characteristics of simple coordination logic and convenient for program implementation.
