A NOVEL METHOD FOR FAULT LOCATION OF TRANSMISSION LINES USING FAULT TRANSIENT CURRENT TRAVELLING WAVES

A novel method for fault location of transmission lines,using fault induced transient current travelling waves,is presented.The arbitrary sound line with "finite length" is selected as a reference line,and the directional (forward and backward) travelling waves are constructed using the transient currents of the fault line and the reference line.The surges coming from the fault are identified by comparing the polarity of the backward surge,which is formed by the travelling wave of the transient current of the fault line and the travelling wave in the reference line,against the polarity of the corresponding forward surge.The effect of surges that come from the reference line is avoided.The feasibility of the novel method is proved by EMTP simulation.
