Ultra-long span non-repeater optical transmission technologies and applications

This paper introduces the ultra-long span non-repeater optical transmission technologies, the solutions of the Fiberhome Inc. for ultra-long span transmission without repeater, and their characteristics and applications. The ultra-long span non-repeater system demands low cost for operation and maintenance, and is usually applied in some special cases, such as inter-city connection, offing, no man′s land (desert, swamp, forest) and communication system for power transmission lines. The main limiting factor for ultra-long span is optical power loss. By using optical amplifiers the power limit can be solved, but it will bring out the problem in OSNR. To increase the length of non-repeater span, the first choice of technology selection is to use optical fibers with superior performance. Then the other choices in turn are using appropriate modulation technology, FEC coding and increasing the transmission power. When these normal means still can not meet the needs, the application of Raman amplifier should be considered and the remote optical pump amplifier can be selected as the last choice.
