A study on soil nutrient loss control by slope eco-engineering in the Three Gorges Reservoir region ——Taking the contour hedgerows as an example

The application of contour hedgerows on the slopeland of reservoir region is a typical type of Slope Eco engineering (SEE). Rainfall simulation (rainfall intensity in 1 14~1 32 mm/min) was made on plots of the purple slopeland (46 6%) planted with contour hedgerows and the slope farmland plot in the Three Gorges Reservoir region. Experiments indicated the soil loss and runoff of the plot just planted contour hedgerows was 16 9% and 24 8% of that of the slope farmland plot under close rainfall and rainfall intensity conditions, and the value of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, total potassium and available potassium was 61 9%, 18 4%, 28 5%, 100 0% and 99 9% of that of the slope farmland plot. The nutrient content in runoff of plots planted with contour hedgerows was higher than that of the slope farmland plot in runoff detention by hedgerows and mulching material. Estimated values of nutrient loss indicated the nutrient loss in runoff is the major way of the available nutrient loss on the slopeland. Thus, decreasing runoff is the effective way to decrease the available nutrient loss in the contour hedgerow crop system. Ameliorating the infiltrating and erosion resistant characters of surface soil by fertilization and mulching can effectively control soil loss, runoff and nutrient loss. The effect of soil and nutrient loss control was the best in the plot applied organic manure and the plot applied organic/inorganic manure and covered with wheat straws. For the low investment, contour hedgerow crop system applying organic manure(44 000 kg/hm\+2) can be an available way to control soil erosion and nutrient loss in this region in case sources of organic manure are sufficient.
