Environmental and genotypic variations of β-glucan content and Their genetic Modification

Zhan Guoping; Ding Shouren (Deparment of agronormy, Zhejiang Agricultural University, Hang Zhou 310029)
β- glucan content in barley grain is controlled by genetic factors, but shows some differ ence in productive areas and years. High temperature and less rainfall during grain maturity favors synthesis and accumulation of β- glucan. β- glucan content is closely related to activity and ex pression of β- glucan, and is also assoiated with endosperm texture, shell, row type and grain weight. Enzymic method, chromatographic method and fluorescence are widely used currently ndetermination of β- glucan. In this paper, β- glucan improvement by breeding is also discussed.
