A Fuzzy Flow Control Mechanism for Congestion Control in Computer Networks

Future computer network will become a high speed packet switched network that can be able to provide various services to support a wide range of network applications. The design of an effective flow control mechanism is critical to the enhancement of the network performance. Based on the related researches on ATM networks a fuzzy based explicit rate (ER) control mechanism is presented. By monitoring the average ABR queue length and it variation rate, and with the aid of a set of linguistic rules, the flow rate is calculated using the control mechanism. Simulations show that the mechanism is stable and robust. Additionally, it can avoid congestion effectively and is of high link bandwidth utilization.
