Determination of copper in water by a L-cysteine modified gold electrode

A new chemically modified gold electrode was prepared by covalent self assembled using L cysteine as a modifier. A new approach was developed for sensitive and selective determination of copper in water by the electrode. An electro active complex of copper with L cysteine was formed and accumulated on surface of the electrode while the electrode was immersed into a stirred copper containing NaH 2PO 4 Na 2HPO 4 buffer solution. While the electrode accumulated various concentrations of copper,the electrochemical current changed and the potential remained same. The value of peak current increased linearly with the copper concentration in the range of 0.1 to 30 μmol/L. The detection limit was 5 nmol/L and the mechanism of determination is proposed.
