Experimental study on the deformation monitoring of reinforced concrete T -beam using BOTDR

The principle of Brillouin optical time domai n reflectometer (BOTDR) is introduced and its application to the strain monitori ng of the strain distribution of the reinforced concrete beam is studied. The ex perimental results show that the strains measured by BOTDR optical fiber sensor are in good agreement with those by strain gauges. By comparing the measured s trains of the steel bar inside the concrete with those attached on the concrete surface at the same level, the damage was detected when the load reached 25 kN. And the deflection of the beam was also calculated with the strain distribution measured by BOTDR. Its concluded that, as an advanced distributed optical fiber sensing technology, BOTDR is good at measuring the strain distribution of reinfo rced concrete structures. It is accurate and feasible to be used in the field of deformation monitoring and damage detection of reinforced concrete structures.
