Orientation method of FOG/TS with installation error compensation

A new method based on a fiber optic gyro(FOG) is proposed to orient a total station(TS) accurately without the need of another visible global positioning system(GPS) control point.In this method,the FOG is fixed with the telescope of the TS.The FOG is driven by the TS to rotate 180° in horizontal and vertical planes,respectively,and measures in the east position,the east compensatory position,the west compensatory position and the west position.Based on the strict observation equations of four positions,the formula to calculate the azimuth of the traverse axis of the TS with the four measurements is obtained,which can effectively eliminate the influence from the installation error between the axis of the FOG and the traverse axis of the TS. The numerical simulation shows that even under unfavorable cases the error of orientation arisen from the installation error is less than 17″.With the help of a compass,the error is expected to be within 10″.Such an orientation accuracy is good enough for many regular measurements.
