Recent advance in Lathyrus sativus and toxin ODAP

Lathyrus sativus Linn. (grass pea) is a popular drought-tolerant and flood-tolerant important grain legume crop in several tropical and subtropical countries, such as Ethiopia and the Indian. It is grown for human consumption, animal feed and fodder, and several other purposes. The protein content as well as other nutrient compositions in grass pea seeds is similar to or even higher than some commonly other agriculturally important grain legumes. Likewise, grass pea is a source of commercially important traits, it can remarkably tolerate harsh environmental conditions, such as flooding and drought, salinity, and low soil fertility, and to infectious diseases. Thanks to these traits, production costs are very low and, therefore, grass pea is the cheapest source of dietary proteins for subsistence farmers with limited resources of the Indian subcontinent and Africa. Therefore, as world demand for legume feed protein is likely to increase, due to increasing demand for animal food products, the cultivation of grass pea should be considered in regions with suitable environments, especially in arid regions. However, a drawback that limits wider cultivation of this crop is the presence of the neurotoxin β-N-oxalyl-L-α, β-diaminopropionic acid (β-ODAP) that causes paralysis of the lower limbs in humans (as lathyrism). Therefore, in order to exploit this potential, good quality, cheap protein sources as well as to increase cooperation between researchers internationally both within and between disciplines, it is necessary to summarize review the latest advances on Lathyrus sativus Linn.. The paper reviews some research achievements in different scientific disciplines.
