Glutathione metabolism and environmental stresses in plants

Glutathione (GSH) is an abundant and ubiquitous antioxidant with proposed roles in the storage and transport of reduced sulphur, the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, and the regulation of enzyme activity. It also plays a key role in the maintenance of tissue antioxidant defences and in the regulation of redox-sensitive signal transduction. The size of glutathione pool and its redox status are tightly correlated with the tolerance of plants to a broad spectrum of xenobiotics and a wide series of abiotic and biotic stresses. This review summarizes current knowledge on glutathione biosynthesis and metabolism, transport, signal transduction and their responses to environmental stresses in plants.
