Single-kernel Hardnesses and Their Single-kernel Frequencies of Some Winter Wheat Varities in China

Kernel hardness is one of the important quality traits of wheat and mainly affects milling and foodprocessing qualities of wheat.Single kernel characterization system was employed to measure the single-kernel hardnesses and kernel frequencies of 252 winter wheat varieties(lines) and the results showed that the varieties(lines) could be divided into five grades and three groups according to their kernel hardnesses,and grade four and five varieties and grade three variety accounted for 95.2% and 4.8% of the sixty four softness varieties(lines),respectively;of the 31 mixed hardness varieties,grade 3 varieties and grade 4 and 2 varieties made up 93.6%,and 3.2%,respectively;of the 148 hardness varieties,grade 1 varieties were the major part accounting for 92.4% and grade 2 varieties accounted 7.6%.The single-kernel hardenesses varied within 12~104 with their standard deviations ranging between 12 and 19.All the hardness types occurred and differed among the varieties in different regions of wheat production;the hardnesses of the varieties in wheat production region of north China and Huanghuaihai wheat production region wee higher than those in wheat production regions located in the middle-lower reaches of Yangtze River and southeast China,the varieties in the former regions were mainly of hardness types and the varieties in the latter regions were mainly of softness types and the types with mixed single-kernel hardnesses.The hardness classification related to frequency distribution and average single-kernel hardnesses of the kernels within a certain hardness range and the softness wheat varieties had an average hardness of 14~40 and a standard diviation of 12~17 with their kernels with their hardnesses below 46 accounting for 75%~98% and their kernels with their hardnesses above 47 accounting for 6%~36%.The hardness wheat varieties had a hardness ranging within 56~104 and a standard deviation varying between 12 and 20,and their kernels with the kernel hardnesses below 46 and above 47 accounted for 1%~19% and 82%~100%,respectively;The mixed hardness wheat varieties had a hardness ranging between 32~63 and a standard deviation varying between 17 and 29,and their kernels with the kernel hardness below 46 and above 47 accunted for 26%~75% and 23%~74%;The softness or hardness wheat varieties showed a concentrative kernel distribution thus having a good uniformity and the mixed hardness wheat varieties presented a dispersive distribution thus having poor uniformity.
