Chemical Constituents and Their Anti-microbial Activities of Essential Oil in Flower Buds of Carpesium macrocephalum

Chemical constituents and their contents of essential oil in air-dried flower buds of Carpesium macrocephalum were examined by GC-MS and then the anti-microbial activities of the essential oil to fourteen pathogens commonly found in crops were tested.It was shown that the extraction rate of the essential oil was 2.9% and there were 53 chemical constituents identified in the essential oil and the peak area of them made up 86.01% of the total peak area;The major ones of the constituents were(E,E)-3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-1,6,10,14-hexadecatetraen-3-ol(15.33%),toluene(11.32%),(3α,5α)-3,5,14,19-tetrahydroxycard-20(22)-enolide(6.00%),2-ethoxytetrahydrofuran(5.44%) and(Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid(3.51%).Anti-microbial testing showed that the oil had the highest anti-microbial to Gaeumannomyces graminis and Rhizoctonia cerealis,and its inhibition rate to the two microbes surpassed 97% when it was used to treat them at 0.5 mg/mL for five days;it presented strong anti-microbial activities to Fusarium graminearum and Fulvia fulva.The paper has been the first research report on both the chemical compositions and their anti-microbial activities of essential oil in flower buds of Carpesium macrocephalum.
