Nutrients and Environmental Factors for the Growth of Nostoc commune Cells

Nostoc commune is a kind of terrestrial nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium.The effects of nutrition,temperature,pH,light intensity and light period on the growth of N.commune cells in BG11 medium were studied in this paper.The results indicated that lacking Ca,N and P remarkably decreased the growth rates of the cells,and the production of both exopolysaccharides(EPS) and protein were obviously inhibited,whereas regular provision of 0.3 % CO_2 promoted the growth of the cells and production of protein.The growth rates of the cells,production of EPS and protein of the cells firstly increased,then decreased along with the increase in temperature,reached optimum at 25℃.Too much acid or too much basic culture conditions were a great disadvantage for algae cells to grow.The growth rates of the cells and protein content were the most at pH 7.5,while the production of EPS were the most at pH 8.0.Along with the increase in the light intensity,the growth rates and production of protein of the cells firstly increased,and then decreased,reached optimum at 2 000 lx,but the production of EPS continuously increased.Along with the shortening of light time,the production of EPS continuously increased,while the production of protein continuously decreased,and 12 h light/12 h dark was an advantage for N.commune cells to grow.It could be concluded that 25℃,pH 7.5,2 000 lx and 12 h light/12 h dark were optimal culture conditions and Ca,N and P were necessary for N.commune cells.
