By using the method of numerical statistics, morphological variation of Medicago ruthenica has been studied. The results show:inter-/intro-population variation occurred remarkably in most morphological characters except for numbers of length of leaf, pod length, pod width, pod shape, seed length and 1 000-seed weight.Based on the 14 morphological characters, cluster analysis showed that,14 populations of Medicago ruthenica have been divided into 4 parts.Principal component analysis showed that five characters including plant height, area of leaf, number of flowers/pod,number of seeds/raceme and seed width are mainly factors which produced morphological variation of Medicago ruthenica.
