The U.S. Factor in the South China Sea Dispute between China and Vietnam

Sun Xiaoling(School of Humanities,Shenzhen Polytechnic,Shenzhen 518055,China)
The South China Sea has been turbulent water during the recent years.Of all the countries that claim the sovereignty of the South China Sea,Vietnam is quite outstanding.Based on the analysis of the history of the dispute between China and Vietnam over territory in the South China Sea and the evolution of U.S.policies toward the South China Sea,the article argues that the tough attitude of Vietnam in the South China Sea Issue in the recent years has some relations with the U.S. policy of "back to Southeast Asia".From neutrality to asserting its right to freedom of navigation and urging a multilateral, peaceful process to resolve this dispute, the changes of U.S. position in the South China Sea Issue have not only given signs to Vietnam that she can use U.S. to balance and hedge China, but also pressed unprecedented pressure on China.
