THE EVOLUTION OF SMECTITE TO ILLITE DURING DIAGENESIS -A KINETIC MODEL

In this paper a kinetic model has been established to describe the evolution of smectite via intermediate illite/smectite (I/S) to illite during diagenesis. Since temperature varies with depth, a new concept "average heating temperature" has been proposed. The model can be used to calculate the rates of sedimentation and the results are generally consistent with those obtained on the basis of geological observations.
