Phosphorus species distribution of sediments in Lake Taihu and its main inflow rivers

Phosphorus species distribution of sediments in Lake Taihu and its main inflow rivers was analyzed with sequential extraction method. The labile ph osphorus (LP) and aluminum bound phosphorus (Al-P) are in very low contents an d the contents of the rest species are iron-bound phosphorus (Fe-P) CaCO3-bound phosphorus (Ca-P) refractory organic phosphorus (Org-P). The rela tive content of Org-P in sediments in main inflow rivers is higher than that i n Lake Taihu and with 2.9 times higher than that in lake sediments in absolute c ontent. The Fe-P content in river sediment is three forth of that in lake sedi ments, and the Fe-P content of the Lake sediments is remarkably positive corre lated with the concentration of that and Chla and remarkably negative correlated with the oxidability of the pore water. Great space diversity of phosphorus fra ctions of sediment in Lake Taihu is observed. While the discrepancy of active sp ecies is greater than the inert ones. In general, the Fe-P and Org-P content s in the sediments of the north area of Lake Taihu were higher than those in oth er areas, which was highly correlated with the higher phosphorus loading and alg ae blooming of the north area of Lake Taihu. The vertical distribution of the ph osphorus species was a little complicated with both increased and decreased tren ds along with the depth. This phenomenon occurred in both Lake Taihu and its mai n inflow rivers. This is related with the difference of ecosystem condition, pol lutant discharge and sedimental dynamic condition in Lake Taihu and its inflow r ivers.
