Geochemical characteristics of paleoseawater from the Early Ordovician of Yangtze Craton: Evidence from the trace elements in conodonts

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) is used to produce the record of rare earth elements (REE) and trace element concentrations of conodonts from different periods of the Early Ordovician in the Three Gorges areas. The obtained results are compared with previously published paleoseawater data from other areas. The paleochemical characteristics of paleoseawater from the Early Ordovician of Yangtze Craton are reconstructed through contrastive research of REE and trace element composition, Ce anomalies (δCe) and Sm/Nd ratio of conodonts. The geochemical abnormity are characterized by strong correlation with the eustatic changes of sea level and the significant changes of paleoenvironment in the east Yangtze Gorges area. These conclusions are compatible with the results of the paleobiostratigraphy and sedimentological studies on these areas. Therefore, geochemical characteristics of the conodonts may be regarded as a useful proxy to reconstruct the paleoenvironment.
