Caledonian Ar-Ar age messages of the Bixiling ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic eclogites in southern Dabieshan

In order to investigate whether the Caledonian age information tha t we reported last year (Qiu et al., 2004) is recorded in other eclogites in Bixil ing, two new selected garnets from the light colored eclogites are further analy zed by the Ar-Ar crushing technique. Their results are quite concordant with ea ch other. Both garnets obtain similar age spectra, well agreeable isochron ages of (459±58) Ma and (450±22) Ma with nearly modern atmospheric 40Ar/36Ar ratios of 294.5±6.7 and 293.9±5.8, respectively. These results are also well agreeab le with those of that garnet reported last year, which indicates that the Caledo nian age information is not occasional and implies that certain geological signi ficance should be further investigated. The hornblende and biotite from the garn et-bearing gneiss within an eclogite outcrop were determined by the Ar-Ar lase r stepped heating. They both yield flat age spectra, well-defined isochrones wi th concordant isochron ages of (275±18) Ma and (273±4) Ma, respectively. These isochron ages are obviously older than 240~220 Ma which is taken as the period of the culmination of the ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism. We are not aw are of any information in the literature on the diffusion rate of argon in garne t. Dunai and Roselieb (1996) showed that the closure temperature for helium in g arnet could be as high as ca 630 ℃. Given the larger size of the argon atom tha n that of the helium atom, it follows that the closure temperature for argon dif fusion in garnet must be considerably higher than 630 ℃. Thus, it is possible t hat primary fluid inclusion ages in garnet might survive high temperature metamo rphism. The K-Ar closure temperatures of hornblende and biotite are 500 ℃and 3 00 ℃, respectively. The cold eclogite in Zhujiachong was formed at t=(635±40) ℃and p=1.8~2.6 GPa (Okay, 1993). The Bixiling eclogites were formed at t=610~ 850 ℃and p 2.7~6.7 GPa (Zhang et al., 1995; Xiao et al., 2000). These calcula ted metamorphic temperatures are obviously higher than the K-Ar closure tempera tures of hornblende and biotite. Therefore, the Ar-Ar ages of hornblende and bi otite indicate that the UHP metamorphism should take place earlier than 275 Ma, which supports the interpretation of the Caledonian Ar-Ar ages of garnets as th e time when the culmination of the UHP metamorphism occurred.
