Applications of nitrogen isotope techniques:The prerequisite analysis of soil organic nitrogen as sources of nitrate contamination of groundwater

Nitrogen isotope co mpositions of groundwater reflect characteristics of contamination sources in th e environment of well-drained soils and oxygenated ground waters. When δ15N va lues of in groundwater range from +4‰to +9‰, the range may indicate nitrate in groundwater derived from soil organic nitrogen or from the mixture of fertili zer and animal wastes. The prerequisite is whether soil had sufficient organic n itrogen in study areas and especially whether a large amount of nitrate converte d from soil organic nitrogen accumulated in the unsaturated zone through compari sons of previous observed data. In addition, a case study from nitrate contamina tion of groundwater beneath Shijiazhuang City was demonstrated the importance of the prerequisite analysis in applications of nitrogen isotope techniques. Soil organic nitrogen is not a major source of nitrate contamination of groundwater b eneath Shijiazhuang City through analyses of lithology, organic matter, nitrate contents of the unsaturated zone and comparisons of irrigation test between fert ilized and unfertilized areas. Under low nitrate concentrations at the year of 1 991, 85.7%of total groundwater samples have δ15N values ranging from +6.1 to +8.4‰, indicating source of nitrate contamination derived from the mixture of fertilizer and animal wastes, while all samples have mean values of δ15N (+9.9 ‰±4.4‰) more than +8‰, and more than half of samples (65%) have δ15N valu es greater than +8‰under high nitrate concentrations at present, reflecting so urce of nitrate contamination derived from animal wastes or animal wastes-conta ining sewages.
