ELEMENT ABUNDANCES OF CHINA’S CONTINENTAL CRUST AND ITS SEDIMENTARY LAYER AND UPPER CONTINENTAL CRUST

The average thickness of the China’s continental crust(CCC)is 47 km,of which the upper continental crust (CUCC) is 31km, and the sedimentary layer(CSL) is 5km.The mass is 12.437×1017,8.005×1017 and 1.146×1017 metric tons respectively for CCC,CUCC and CSL.The mass ratio of the upper to the lower continental crust is 1.8:1.The element abundances were calculated for CCC,CUCC and CSL,respectively,based on the chemical compositions of 2246 samples of various rock types and some complementary data of trace elements. The total abundance of 13 major elements represents 99.6% of the mass of the China’s continental crust,and only 0.4% is counted for by numerous minor elements. Characteristics of rare earth elements,abundance ratios of paired elements and the amounts of metallogenetic elements are also discussed in this paper.
