ON GRAVITATIONAL GLIDING STRUCTURES

A review of the literatures on gravity tectonics, together with geologic findings already won in China, suggests that it is one of the most important tectonic theories, and the development of this theory may be divided into four stages. Gravity tectonics are active at different scales and in different tectonics environments. Of them the gravity sliding structures are common features and easy to be observed. It has widely been accepted. The structures to be considered here are those resulting from the provision of a slope sufficient to initiate gliding or slumping on a tectonic scale. There is a variety of forms of gravity sliding structures. First of all, it is classified into two groups based on a slope which is consequent either uplift or compression, then in according with the progressive phases of orogeny, each of them is subdivided into four genetic forms of gravity sliding structures. The characteristics of gravity sliding structures are summarized. Some problems of gravitational gliding mechenism are briefly discussed. In prospect it is possible that gravity tectonic theory may have a rapid progress since it has great significance both in theory and practice.
