ON JURA-TYPE FOLD (S.CHINA) AND ITS MECHANISM

The Jura-type fold is one of three main classes of fold based on the tectonic significance. It is a very common and wide developed structure in S. China and is considered as a dominant fold-type of cover structure. The Jura-type fold may be classified into five patterns: comb fold and trench fold, loose and dense wave fold, subcomb fold and subtrench fold, box fold, diapiric fold. Each pattern has its morphologic characteristics. Although there are differences in characteristics, yet there are more common points in the mechanism and tectonic setting. The five patterns of the Jura-type fold transfer from one to another in the tectonic trend and in profile. The Jura-type fold occurs in the uppermost level of the crust, so called thin-skinned structure. It is detached away from the basement. Usually the detachment takes place in ductile rock types, such as shale, mudstone or salt. The Jura-type fold is formed under the horizontal compression and belongs to the parallel folding. Each pattern of the Jura-type fold corresponds to a relative position of parallel fold model. The main factors which control the formation of Jura-type fold are slipping surface and ductility difference between layers.
