In magnetotelluric sounding, the MT responses would be seriously distorted and the information of deep geological targets would be obscured by the near-surface conductivity inhomogeneities. The characteristics of the transfer function of electric field E indicats that the near-surface response could substantially super-pose the ones of the deep structures. In 2-D case, the transfer function for E component being perpendicular to the strike plays a role as a high-pass filter with respect to the wave number η as ω approaches to zero . Electromagnetic array profiling (EMAP) is a new approach which can expand the information acquisi-tion and effectively attenuate the static effects by imposing a low pass filter to contract the high-pass characteristics of transfer function E in wavenumber domain. The examples have shown the effectiveness of EMAP method in attenuating the static shifts in MT data.
