VOLCANIC ACTIVITY, FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF SEDIMENTARY BASIN

Since Mesozoic Era, more vigorous tectonic movements took place in the continental crust of China. There occurred not only Indosinian and Yanshanian but also Himalayan movements, which were dominated typically by rifting. During the special Mesozoic Era, plate tectonics prevailed and tectonic movement was also dominated by rifting. Magmatic activities happened along the broken lithosphere and the deep faults of the crust. When they occurred near the surface, the volcanic rock zones were formed. When they took place in the internal crust, the fluid magma chamber were formed, which might have been a high conductive layer. Owing to subduction of the Mesozoic Pacific plate towards the East China crust, the pressure in the deep asthenosphere of the crust increased, and the volcanic movements might result in magma upwelling along the deep faults, then bringing about the deficiency of material and buoyancy below the lithosphere. These might lead the lithosphere to subside and to form the sedimentary basins. Therefore, the volcanic movement is the dynamic factor for the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins, and it reveals the causality of the alternating “basinandrange” structure and of the regularity of the “volcanic movement first and subsidence second”.
