TECTONIC UPLIFT, WATER SYSTEM RESPONSE AND ENVIRONMENT EVOLVEMENT IN THE EASTERN PART OF THE KUNLUN MOUNTAINS

The uplift and the water system response process in the East Kunlun Mountains can be divided into three stages. The first stage dated from 3.0Ma to 1.6Ma, when the plateau forepart began to uplift and the Kunlun Mountains and the Qilian Mountains did not show up yet. There many lakes were developed, and the water system was disperse and short streams. In the second stage (1.6~0.15Ma), with the intense uplift of the Northeast Qinghai_Tibet Plateau, and the Kunlun Mountains and the Qilian Mountains were uplifted so the lakes in these sections dissolved or shranked and massive rivers appeared. The ancient Yellow River thus formed and the upstream lied around the current Huangshui River. The third stage (0.15~0Ma) saw a strong tectonic uplift in the section when water system feature greatly changed and the current water system pattern formed finally. While the present Kunlun Mountains are still uplifting with greater velocity and the upper reaches of Jialuhe River in the East Kunlun Mountains are now cutting through the Buqing Mountain and retrogressing to the headstream of the Yellow River, and has a trend to capture it.
